Teaching History/Experience
My name is Marcela Beltran. I have been teaching for 23 years. I started my teaching career at Sherman Elementary where I worked for seven years teaching second and third graders in both English and Spanish. I also have worked outside of the classroom coaching and supporting new teachers in grades K-6. During that time, I had the opportunity to develop and co-teach courses for the San Diego Unified's teaching intern program formerly known as BECA.. When Normal Heights Elementary opened in 2007, I joined the new school's teaching staff and became part of this wonderful learning community.
Teaching Philosophy
I believe that students learn best when they feel they are unique individuals with much to contribute. They do well in school when they feel safe, respected, and held to a high standard of learning. Children succeed in school when the teachers and parents work together as a team.
Recognition/Awards/Special Certifications
I am a certified math specialist. I participated in courses that taught me how to better understand and teach math to Elementary school aged children. I also have a masters degree in educational technology. I think integrating technology into the classroom can help motivate, facilitate, and support teaching and learning. I have been chosen to be teacher of the year by my Normal Heights colleagues twice! This is quite an honor because my colleagues are some of the best teachers I have ever had the pleasure to work with and their opinion matters very much to me.
Interests/Hobbies
When I am not at school, I enjoy going to, hosting, and cooking dinners for my family and friends. I also love reading and going to see movies and plays. I love to travel. I often go to Spain and France where my husband's family is. We go to Peru once in a while to visit my childhood home.
Favorites
Food: My favorite food is sushi but I like eating almost everything!
Book: I love reading mystery and suspense novels. I always have a kindle book or two checked out from the library.
Music: Music is a great love of mine. I have a broad taste that ranges from Spanish rock/pop/classics to Brazilian and Italian artists 60's to current rock/folk and hip hop.
Sport: Ilike going to Pilates classes as well as yoga classes at least once a week. I also go to the La Mesa secret stairs to exercise on the weekends.
