The main goal of first grade is learning to read. The foundations of reading are often set in kindergarten, when students learn the letters, sounds, and some basic reading skills. First grade is the year to become true readers of both fiction and nonfiction texts.
Students will be learning to independently read one or two new books everyday. Additionally, we will access science and social studies content areas through shared reading sources. The best way to support your children in language arts and content areas is to take them to the public library every week or two, help them choose a variety of fiction and nonfiction picture books, and read and discuss these books with him.
The mathematics required of first graders include addition, subtraction, measurement and geometry (length, weight, volume, and geometric figures), time (to the hour and half hour), money (coin values), basic fractions, number sense (numbers up to 100), algebra and functions (number sentences and their symbols), statistics, data analysis, and probability (charting, graphing, data, patterns), and mathematical reasoning (solving problems with models, reasoning, and making connections). The homework packet will include plenty of practice for each math standard.
